MEA: The Product

MEA is an effective, minimally invasive procedure for the safe treatment of menorrhagia in a wide range of patients. It is specifically designed to produce precise control of tissue ablation, which ensures that therapeutic heating will penetrate to the required depth and achieve effective endometrial ablation.

MEA has been clinically proven in a number of controlled randomised trials to provide equivilant results to the first generation TCR and REA "gold standard" hysteroscopic ablation/ resection techniques.

Clinical evidence shows unparalleled efficacy and long-term patient satisfaction.

MEA is the first doctor interactive "third-generation" product to enter the thermal endometrial ablation market. It retains the advantages of second generation endometrial devices of speed, simplicity and no requirement for visulaisation; however it engages the doctors' professional expertise and surgical skill to interactively optimise treatment outcomes. MEA uses a unique temperature profiling feature that allows the doctor to follow the contours of the patient's uterine cavity and to adapt the treatment accordingly.

A sensor at the applicator tip measures the temperature at the surface of the endometrium. The doctor uses this temperature, displayed by the control console to determine the progress and coverage of treatment heating, and so provides assisted vision, unlike second-generation treatments.

MEA offers a tailored treatment appropriate for each patient. MEA is the only thermal endometrial ablation product currently available that enables the surgeon to effectively treat all areas of the uterine cavity regardless of the shape. This includes uterine cavity lengths of 6-14cm and those with fibroids less than or equal to 3cm an polyps.

The average treatment time for MEA is 3½ minutes and the procedure can be performed in a hospital, outpatient or day-care setting under local or general anaesthesia. Introducing MEA into your clinic is a cost effective way of not only managing menorrhagia but also meeting the needs of the patient, the doctor and the healthcare system.

MEA is:

  • Fast - average treatment time is 3 ½ minutes Effective - 96% of procedures produce significant menstrual flow reduction and 61% produce amenorrhoea (i.e. Total cessation of bleeding)
  • Versatile - not limited by irregular uterine cavities and/or fibroids Adaptive - the unique temperature feedback and profiling feature allows the clinician to follow the contours of the patient's uterine cavity and adapt the treatment accordingly
  • Patient friendly - patients reported minimal discomfort and fast recovery enabling them to quickly resume their everyday lives Ideal for an outpatient or day care setting
